She didn't look at him, but nodded. "I ended his life, yes. I ended it because he would have died no matter what. I wasn't going to let him suffer."

Carwyn sighed. "I could still kill you. Right here, right now. Put closure on everything, tie up the loose ends, and go on with my life. I could walk away from here with the knowledge that my son's death had been avenged."
Carwyn stood up over the human, threateningly leaning toward her. Then he turned and slowly walked away. He made his way toward the trees, still ablaze from the fight. He paused at the edge of the clearing, and peered over his shoulder.
"I believe I can settle with thinking that the fire swept you away instead."
He disappeared into the flames, his silhouette the only thing left to see.

Cass clenched her fists. "GET BACK HERE YOU SONOVABITCH!" she shouted, shaking from the effort. "I ANSWERED YOU, SO YOU'D BETTER GET YOUR SORRY ASS BACK HERE BEFORE I COME AFTER YOU!"

A voice echoed from the tops of the trees around her.
"What is it?" Carwyn asked.

"I answered your question. You answer mine. Why Maria? Why her sons?!" Cass exhaled quickly and blinked back tears. "Why did you kill Caleb after forcing him to watch his parents and baby brother's deaths1?"

Carwyn hesitated for a moment. "I had lost my everything. I felt that those responsible deserved the same."

Cass looked up at him, glowering. "I killed your son out of necessity. He would have bleed to death in pain if I hadn't. You killed an entire family. You dropped a newborn babe from the sky in front of the mother. You killed her child after forcing him to watch his parents deaths. That is an equal trade? They did nothing to you!"

Carwyn's voice adamantly held its proper timbre. "When you hear of your son's death from a fellow angel, do you think you hear the sugar-coated version? Do you think I had the "happy" ending that you told me? Do you think I'd do something so drastic if I knew he had died out of necessity? Child, for one so strong in her words, you are weak in connecting the dots."
Carwyn dropped from the branch he stood in. "When word came around to me, Asthore's death was not one of tragedy. He did not die by mercy. He died out of hate. I heard his ragged body was jumped upon by several hunters. I heard that his wings were torn from his body, his eyes gouged by knives of blue steel. I heard that he was ripped into tiny pieces as an example. I heard gruesome details that I do not even wish to iterate at this moment. I did what I did, and I cannot change that fact. Do not judge me. I may not be a "human", but after the spectacle of yourself from earlier tonight, I do not believe I can call you one either. That does not make me less of a person."

"Whatever version you heard is a lie. He was blown by a blast from a Light Angel. He had lost a leg, a hand, and a wing. Ami couldn't heal him in that state." Cass lost her composure and several tears rolled down her face. "I still think back to that and wonder what I could have done for him. He helped us in that battle. And then I think back to what happened to my family afterward . . . " She looked up at Carwyn. "Were I not lacking the strength to stand, I would kill you for what you did to them."

"Were I not an essential leader for my race...I would let you."
With that, Carwyn lept back into his tree. "Farewell, human. I hope the years treat you better than they treated me." His silhouette melted away again, his tree cracking under the pressure. With a snap, it fell, crashing to the ground. Carwyn was nowhere to be seen.

Cass shielded her face from the embers the branch kicked up. She looked around the clearing, at the destruction caused, and the flames still blazing, edging closer to her posistion. "I gotta get outta here," she murmured to herself. Bracing herself against her knee, she tried to pull herself to her feet again. The smoke burned her throat as she pushed herself completely up, swaying from the blood loss. She took a step, and again fell to her knees. Around her, she heard the crackling of the fire. Her throat burned intensely. How had she not noticed before, she wondered? 'I'm tired. . ." she whispered. "Ugh. This is not the death I envisioned. Fucking fire. Right. That's grand." Her strength completely failed her and she fell face first onto the ground. "Not the death I envision. Stupid angel should have just put me out of my misery." Her eyelids felt heavy. "Maybe. . . Maybe I'll make it home, Nathaniel," she whispered as her eyes closed.

Anthony's eyes trailed off into the distance. A column of smoke was steadily rising only a handful of miles away, and an orange glow seemed to resonate from between the thick trees. Fucking hel, he thought. That can't be good.
He leapt from the tree branch and began to take off towards the flames. Behind him he heard a few muffled cries. SHIT, THE ANGELS
Anthony cranked it to double speed. Meep meep, he absent-mindedly thought. Meep motherfucking meep.

Longinus looked out beside him. "Kevin! Look! Smoke in the distance! Do you think it's the hu-"
His words were cut off as a flash of steel and leather flew by in the corner of his eye. Longinus stared in disbelief as the human sprinted across the ground toward the dilapidated forest. He was right...THERE?!
Longinus wasted no time continuing the pursuit, leaving Kevin in the dust. "Come back here!" Longinus shouted.

He sped up even more, the glade of trees coming up in front of him. Only a little further

Longinus swept Anthony up in his arms. "Got you, you son of a bitch."
Longinus flew up and over the treeline. With a grin on his face, he whispered into Anthony's ear. "It was nice knowing you, but nobody calls me fluffy and lives."
He dropped Anthony from high above, down into the burning clearing below.
