As the water from the rainfall above slowly dripped into the Underground, the lights flickered and blinked. In the dim light, two people were balanced among piping of metal and PVC. One was a girl crouched upon a pink PVC pipe. She was looking at a boy with black hair and red bangs. He glanced up at her, blue eyes flashing in the flickering light cast by their ring of candles. The girl flexed her wings and stood. "So what do you think we should do about your sister, Nakari?"

"Beat her face in," he replied darkly. Sighing, he arched his back backwards, slowly cracking every vertebrae, knowing it would bother the girl. "I don't know, actually. I just wish she could see the glory of this," he murmured. Opening his hand, a small orange fireball formed, warming his skin. "I would give anything for that."

"Does she have nothing of significance, or is she buying into this whole 'equality means being the same' crap? If it's going to cost me your support, I can't have this sister of yours as a liability. You know that." She shifted and stood. "Nakari. When it comes to standing against friends, strangers, teachers, I know I can trust you. But your family? We need a solution." Fiametta opened her wings and glided down to stand on the same level as Nakari. Placing a hand on his shoulder, she said, "I trust you. I just don't trust those close to you."

He shrugged her hand off. "Yeah, yeah, I know," he grumbled. "I grew up with her though. What do you expect? I was in the womb with her for Christ's sake." He exhaled slowly. "I'll think of something."

Fiametta nodded and slipped into the shadows, using her own route to escape the Under; leaving Nakari to extinguish the flames and find his own way out.

Waiting until she was gone, Nakari whirled around and punched the cold concrete wall. All of his frustration gathered around him, and he screamed once. As his voice echoed away, he rested his head against the cool rock. The throbbing in his hand felt almost pleasant against the stark frustration of the choice he was being forced to make.
Kyra or her? Who is she kidding? he thought. Motionless, he remained in the Under until the candles grew dim.

Fiametta heard his howl distorted by a mile and a half of pipe. She sighed softly to herself. "I'm sorry," she whispered to the dank, damp air. Pulling herself up with a gymnist's skill, she pushed up the trapdoor that came up through the floorboards of her room.
She glanced at her uniform laid out on her chair. Tomorrow's the start of first term. And the start of the next real fight. "Good night, Papa," she said to the picture on her bedside table. She put on an old sweatshirt that said "Harlgard High Hornets" and laid down to drift into a deep, dreamless sleep.

A couple hours, Nakari trudged through the front door to his house.
"Where were you, dork," Kyra said teasingly, paused at the base of the steps. "Underground?"
If only you knew how right you were, Nakari thought as he forced a grin. "Of course not. Are you ready for new term tomorrow. Kyra nodded eagerly.
"Yes!" she exclaimed, nodding. "I'm off to bed now. Good night, Ari."
He nodded to her. "Night."
I'll never be able to choose, he thought miserably as he stalked up to his room. His fresh pressed uniform lay upon his bed. "Dammit," he muttered, knocking it onto the floor. Without another thought, he flopped onto his bed and fell asleep.

Marco smiled as he opened the door, ushering out a younger girl, what was her name.. Kaitlin..? Tori..? Kori! That was it. He was showing Kori out. The pretty Junior smiled as well, her messed-up curls haloing her face. Marco reached out and smoothed them down.
"Good night," he said sweetly to her. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he took her by the hips.
"Do I really have to go?" she asked, smiling.
"It's a school night," Marco replied, shurgging. "I'll call you, dont worry." The girl sighed and smiled again, unaware of the lie. Marco gave her a kiss, said good-bye, kissed again, and shut the door.
Nice night. he thought, smirking.

Fiametta walked down the halls with her head held high. Most students gave her a nod, a few glared at her, some didn't notice her, and and the rest called her name or high-fived or pounded it. The teachers of the school mostly ignored her. Mr. Thompson waved her over to him. "Looks like it'll be a good year, eh, Fiametta? You've got me for homeroom and 7th period this year." He laughed as she smiled and went on her way to the lunchroom to sit with Nakari, his sister, Jacoby, and a few others.

Nakari yawned and looked up as Fiametta walked in the room. "Yo," he said, nodding in her direction. "How was your night, Fi?"

"Meh. It was decent. Yours? I'm surprised you've still got a voice."

"No thanks to you," he said with a nonchalant shrug.
Kyra blinked, and turned away from the two. "So, Jacoby. . .How's that weather, eh?"

He smiled, his feline eyes glinting. "It's still a little too humid for me. Can't wait until winter hits. You're going on the class ski trip, right? One chaperone to forty kids? It'll be a blast." His tail gently brushed around her ankles.

She resisted a grimace. "Yes, of course. I love winter." Her eyes widened almost imperceptibly. Shoot! she thought, shaking the feeling of chaos from her. She swore she would never mess with that again. . .
"Are you excited?" she asked civilly.
