"Horrified," she replied in a heavy breath. She wrapped her arms around his warm body and muttered into his shoulder, "I thought you might've died."

He laughed darkly. "You thought I couldn't handle myself then?" He pulled away from her for a moment, grasped her head in his hands and brought his lips to hers again.

"I know you handle yourself well. I just didn't know if it'd be good enough against him," she got out between kisses. She winced as she smelled the acrid scent of singed feathers. She warned, "Watch it, hotstuff."

Leaning back against the counter, Kaleigh shrugged. "My dad works for the Government. In the Expendibility Department. My mom is a housewife who never does anything but shop and pamper herself. My brother and I were raised by our nanny. She was. . ." She trailed off and looked at the ground. "It was decided that we were old enough to take care of ourselves by the time we were about ten. Since then, it's random interaction. Just a normal family, really."
