Sabine looked about for a moment, startled. She scrambled to her feet as more adrenaline flooded her system. Despite this, she was still growing tired. Within minutes, she leaned against her car with shaking legs and hands. She couldn't get her stupid car unlocked because she was both so exhausted and scared.

Nolan gasped for breath, pain rippling through his limbs as they reshaped. He had always hated snakes, even before he could shift. As he slipped on his shirt, he spat out the extra venom that had accumulated in his mouth. But in the twilight, he was thankful for the serpentine eyesight.
Everything was outlined in light, and as Nolan crept out of the shadows, he scanned the area, searching for Sabine. He could smell her scent, but it was progressively growing fainter and was tainted with fear. He noted that the man's scent was stale as well, but Sabine was his main concern.
He followed her trail, back towards the mall. She must be headed for her car. he thought, a bit relieved. It looked as if she had gotten there undisturbed, but as he reached the parking lot, her car remained in its spot and she was nowhere to be seen.
"Sabine? You here?" he called out tentatively, breath short from his run.

Sabine's head shot up from the bench she was sitting on. "Who. . ." she murmured. "Nolan?" she called back, cautious. She leaned forward on her seat, her exhausted legs shaking. She wouldn't be taken by surprise again. . .

Nolan caught a strong whiff of Sabine's scent before he heard her timid call. He hurriedly walked over to her car, still aware of her fear scent.
"Are you okay?" he asked, brown eyes soft with concern.

She slumped in relief. Starting to nod, she stopped. "I will be eventually," she murmured. "I just. . . I need to calm down." Absently, she rubbed her sore thigh. The bruise was starting to throb. "Are you okay? I just. . I had to. . ."

"Are you hurt?" Nolan asked, disregarding her question. He opened the door of her car gently and leaned in closer

She looked down, counted her limbs, took her pulse, then looked back to him. "I'm alive. That's all I have right now. Good enough?"

Nolan began to object, but as he didnt scent any blood on her, he nodded. "Here, I'll drive," he said softly, assisting her across the console. "You can stay at my place tonight. It'll be safer; for both you and your family."

Sabine made some sounds of mild objection. Unable to make a coherent argument, she just looked at him. "There's nothing I can really say to change your mind. . . is there?" she finally asked.

He gave her a soft smile, but hid the deep, rattling fear and concern he felt when he gazed into her pretty green eyes. "No way at all, babe. Sit still and I'll have us home in a bit," he assured her, revving the engine to life.

They rode a while in easy silence, the previous threat of the hooded man still fresh in their minds but far away seemed the actuality and danger of it all. NOlan clicked on the radio.
"Any specific music you like..?" he asked, tuning the static.

She reached past him quickly and grabbed one of the discs on the visor. "Radio died with the new millennium, man," she said as she popped the shiny into the CD player. "Well, not NPR on Saturdays. . . But. . ."
