Sabine entered the Target of the area, and tugged Nolan into a denser crowd of people. "Sorry," she murmured. "There was a rather unsavory individual with his girlfriend who was trying to spy on us."

Nolan's ears pricked. I knew that.. But what about that other..?

Sabine quickly looked over the crowd for the black hooded nemesis of all that is good and happy, and not seeing him, grinned. "He's gone."

"I'm not so sure..." Nolan muttered, the hair on his arms still prickling.

Sabine blinked. "Dameon? Yeah, he isn't. . ." She trailed off, movement to the side of her catching her eye. She turned to look, but nothing was there.
What. .. she thought. A chill raced down her spine.

Nolan pushed Sabine ahead of him, muttering, "How about we go somewhere else?"

She nodded slowly as she drew her eyes away from the display. I could have sworn. . . She shook the thought from her head, and reached, almost subconsciously for Nolan's hand.

Dameon gasped as a sudden stab of fear stabbed his heart. He could feel his blood streaming quicker through his veins, the adrenaline making his senses unnaturally sharper. He clenched his fists, trying to push the hot throbbing away from his consciousness.
"They're scared of something," he muttered half to himself.
Robyn blinked, gazing around the area for any signals of danger or trouble. Sabine's footsteps were a bit rushed, and her eyes shined as she reached for Nolan's hand. Mr. Ross's muscles looked tensed and his brown eyes kept flickering behind the two of them. Besides the couples' behavior, she couldn't see anything wrong with the scene.
"Maybe they're just really nervous, I mean first date. I was nearly dying of fright when we first hung out," she tried to conclude.
"No," Dameon murmured. "There's gotta be something..."
A dark figure caught his attention from the peripheral. Dameon opened his mouth to comment, but was suddenly choked by a powerful force of emotion. Chill crept through his body, focusing all his attention on the task ahead. He was in pursuit and nothing, no one, could stop him from getting exactly what he wanted. It chilled his bones and his heart thrummed icily to the beat of that man's cruel intention.
"Robyn, we have to stop that guy!" he exclaimed.
"Dameon, what? Why? He's done nothing wro--"
"He's gonna kill Sabine and Nolan."

"Where is your car?" Sabine asked, nudging Nolan toward the door. "Mine is outside of Penny's. . . Just a short jog. You know? I can drive you back later."
She took a quick glance behind her, hoping to reassure herself that she was only being paranoid, but with a short glimpse of someone ducking outside of her vision, and Nolan's almost aggressive fear did nothing to stall her unease.
They almost reached the door when suddenly Sabine's heart skipped a beat. "Not again," she whispered before breaking free from Nolan's hand and dashing through the door, past the hooded menace.

"Sabine!" Nolan shouted. He gripped the air where her hand was a moment ago. Unfamiliar scents hung in the air, almost sinister, while Sabine's fear scent left a flouerscent trail out through the door. He growled, low in his throat.
He pushed through the door. Nolan could still catch Sabine's scent, though faint as it diffused in the cool night air. His brown eyes desperately scanned the area for the girl and whatever, or whoever, had spooked her.

Sabine raced through the parking lot, the crisp summer air pumping through her lungs. She could hear someone pursuing not far behind her. Get away from people, she repeated to herself over and over again. God, just get him away from Nolan! Her sneakers slapped against the pavement as she scanned for a place to hide.
The school. . . Her eyes widened, and she took a sharp turn to the left. The footsteps behind her quickened, following her. The light turned red as she reached the intersection, and with a gulp, she dashed into traffic.

Horns screamed in the street as Sabine dodged between cars. One braked a moment too late and slammed into Sabine's thigh. Curses rang in the air, and feet pounded behind her, the man not impeded by oncoming traffic as she was. She grimaced and pushed on, finally reaching the other curb. Her leg ached as an insta-bruise formed, slowing her down slightly.
She reached the school play ground, her sneakers slipping on the gravel. A force slammed into her from behind, and the small pebbles dug into the tender flesh of her face. Panic flooded her veins and she struggled beneath the weight of the individual. He snared her wrist and flipped her roughly onto her back. Her air left her and she looked up into the shadowed face of her attacker.
"What. . . What do. . . you want?" she managed to croak between gasps.
In the faint light, she saw a small smirk light the man's face.

Panting, the golden retriever stopped, scenting the air again. His chest knotted up in fear, for an instant he couldn't catch her scent anymore. There it was, flowery and sweet and tanged with panic. And there was her pursuer's, dark and musky, plagued with hunger and greed. His achy paws took off down the sidewalk, his fur on end.
Finally, their scents grew stronger and more acute. He could see their dark silhouettes against the horizon, the deep dusk providing just enough light to illuminate Sabine's terrified, tear-streaked face. The man's backside was facing him; he had no forewarning of his appearance.
His golden-brown fur receded and his limbs broke and shifted. His body coiled and shaped, lithe and supple, and his brown eyes glowed golden in the dark, canines now venomous fangs. His body shimmered in golden scales.
The copperhead was poised to strike, awaiting the moment the man would move even the slightest inch.

Sabine looked up to her attacker with wide, fearful eyes. "Answer me one thing," she whispered. "Why did you kill Katie?"
The man smiled again. "I thought she was you," he replied nonchalantly. "I should have been more aware of the jewel I was searching for. Now." He lifted one hand and slowly began to draw a finger across Sabine's forehead.

The snake whipped out from the bushes, sinking his long fangs deep into the man's calf. He gave a cry, his hand dropping to his sides. He stumbled, the venom already starting to take effect. The serpent twisted away, hissing.
