Nick was quick to put up a thin sheet of frosted glass. He smiled at Keirah, scooped her up, and sprinted down the hall to the kitchen.

Keirah yelped and clung to Nick's shirt. He sat her down at a table within minutes, grinning. She sighed exasperatedly. "You're such a goober," she murmured.

"Why are you comparing me to a peanut? Really?" He smiled. However that smile was soured once he tasted the room-temperature water. He plopped a few ice cubes into it. "Ah... Much better," he said just as the rest of the wedding party came into the room.

Ashlyn sighed, setting down her lovely acoustic guitar. She blew her bangs up in frustration, though they fell back into place. This had happened earlier, when she had tried to compose something on the piano. Her fingers felt no pulse towards the music today.
She weaved the pick into the strings, feeling disappointed. The brunette shut down the studio, climbed the stairs, and emerged from the basement. What a professional I am, she thought, grinning slightly. She smoothed the wrinkles out of her tattered, but favorite, jeans and fixed the hood of her maroon hoodie that was fraying at the edges. She glanced down at her Converse, which were the only part of her ensemble that looked half-decent.
"Well, Bells, I'm in a block. I think I might need to get a better-paying job," Ashlyn said as she grabbed a Dr. Pepper out of the fridge. She plopped down beside the orange tabby cat on the couch. "Unless you actually start paying your half of the rent."
Bella purred, rubbing her cheek against her mistress. Her green eyes glinted, as if answering Ashlyn's question. Ashlyn sighed and scratched the cat behind the ears absently.

Nick laughed and waved at Nakari and the rest, including Sister Beatrice and the rest of his "family" from the orphanage. They had come from a different wing of the hotel and couldn't concive why Nakari had a couple ice-chips on his shoulder.

Ashlyn was woken from her doze as Dirty Little Secret sang in her pocket. She grunted and flipped over, and dug her cell phone out. She grinned slightly as she glanced at the screen, even though she knew who was calling from the ringtone. Evan had insisted upon the upbeat All-American Reject tune as his personal calling signature. She slid up the phone and answered.
"Hey there, babe," Evan greeted. Ashlyn grinned and felt her cheeks blushed, as they did everytime he called her by a petname. "Whatcha up to?"
"Just chilling," she replied, propping herself up on her elbows.
Evan chuckled. "Sounds like super fun. Mind if I come by later, like eight-ish?"
"Sounds like a plan. We might have to convince Tori to go out tonight, though."
"We?"
Ashlyn laughed. "Fine. I might have to get her out of the house."
"Okay then. I'll talk to you later. Love ya."
"Love you too." Ashlyn heard dial-tone. She smiled again.

~!!~
Nakari blocked the punch, and clasped his hand around the smaller woman's fist. With a tug, she was over his shoulder and on the ground. A blast of heat hit him in the face, and he leaped back, reeling in pain.
"Jesus, Keirah!" he shouted, rubbing his eyes. "Was that actually a flame!?" He smelled the air around him. "You burnt off my eyebrows!"
Nick laughed behind them as Keirah sat up. "Shut up! You caught me off guard!"

"Never pick a fight with a woman Nakari." Nick fiddled with a toothpick. "Especially one that can burn you to a crisp."

Nakari arched a brow. "You'd best take your own advice, you know." His face blanched and Keirah smiled at the man. "I mean. . .-" He resisted the urge to gag, "- you are her. . ."
Laughing, Keirah nudged Nakari. "Say it!" she teased. "I bet you can't!"
Nakari shuddered. "Husband."
"YOU OWE ME!" Keirah shouted joyously.
Nakari blinked. "Wait. . . What?"

"Is there something I'm missing here, babe?" Nick looked from his wife to her brother and back a few times. "What does he owe you?"

"Oh no you don't," Keirah said, wagging her finger at Nick. "You and I had a bet that I couldn't get Nakari to admit you were my husband for the first year. Remember?" She paused, grinning. "Pay up."

Nick childlishly stuck out his tounge while handing over twenty bucks out of his pocket.

She grinned, pocketing the money. "Good."
Nakari looked between the two, flabbergasted. "Wait," he said, shaking his head, "Wait. You two had a bet going on? About me?"
Keirah nodded, inspecting her nails. "And I won. I knew I could get you to say the dreaded h word."
Nakari invariably shuddered.

Nakari arched a brow. "Don't you technically still, I don't know, have it?"
Keirah sighed as Nick laughed in the background. "He wasn't supposed to realize that yet."
